The above is based on my experience as an outpatient at the Department of General Surgery and am pleased to award the high rating. However as an outpatient who received outpatient orthopedic treatment I would not rate my experience so highly. Initially the treatment was excellent and the lack of communication from those attending me was well covered by the pamphets and similar literature given. The intermediate appointments treatment [plaster room staff] was also commendable with friendly knowledgeable staff. The final appointment [22 June] experience was marred by over a two hour wait beyond the stated time. It would have been helpful had the 'receptionists' spoken with our group of waiting patients and given explanation/expectations of when we might have our consults. When finally seen it was admittedly well managed by the consultant and I was discharged, However when I queried the continued wearing of the ROM boot it appeared that the advice would be given by physiotherapists - I assumed from what was said that I should have had some contact with them earlier. In the event the consultant indicated that he would refer me to the physio's to complete my rehabilitation and would also write to my GP. I requested a copy of that letter but it was not sent but my GP supplied one dated 28 June which confirmed the physio referral - I had received no referral appointment by mid July which led my GP to write to the orthopedics team to chase this. It is now early September and there has been no further contact from either Ortho or Physio. I now manage my own rehabilitation in consultation with my GP and 'internet' So on that basis I would only rate as 3* the 2nd, 3rd & 4th categories above.

During my 10 day stay on the HDU & Neuro ward this March, I could not have wished for better care. I was treated with the upmost dignity and respect even thought I was unable to care for myself. I cannot thank the staff enough for their care. They really are a credit to the hospital.

All hospital staff I came into contact with were courteous, professional and diligent about there tasks. Quite honestly I received a "world-class" service from this hospital and would recommend Southmead to anyone needing treatment. From consultant to front desk all members of the Team knew their roles and all went the extra mile to ensuring my stay at Southmead was memorable for all the good reasons. Thank you.

I love this beautiful hospital. Light and airy with plenty of helpful volunteers to show you where to go. Often there is a pianist playing gorgeous music in the main hall! The staff are all cheerful and attentive and look you in the eye as they pass, whether they are looking after you or just passing! The doctors take the time to listen and act to help you however they can. The nurses work day and night too and nothing is too much trouble. Physios, cleaners, porters, anaesthestists and all the surgical and administrative staff are just so very kind. I felt extremely well looked after at all times by top professionals. The only criticism I could have is the car park which is often full

Excellent hospital. Lots of volunteers to help if needed. Very easy lay out. Once you get used to the parking it's easy, but make sure you know your registration number as you need this to buy your ticket on the way out. The electronic scanning machines to check in are easy to use, but if you get stuck the volunteers are right there to help, or there is s reception desk if needed. Little shuttle buses can take you to the gate you need. Lots of facilities and a lovely little cafe at the far end, manned by the league of friends, or lots of Costa coffee shops throughout. A lovely clean hospital with lovely helpful staff.

I found Southmead an excellent hospital, and could not fault it. I, along with my family and friends, have been made to feel welcome by all members of staff. My whole experience has been helped by the great care I have received from the medical team, as well as the nursing, caterers, admin and cleaning staff. All my out patient appointments have been on time, which is excellent. My only criticism is that when I was operated on for the second time, I knew I was very poorly, but I didn't take on board exactly what the removal of my bone flap involved and how I would look. I was rather shocked when I looked in the mirror the following day, on my own. Perhaps surgeons could draw a picture or show photos before an operation to show patients how they could look after the surgery to prepare them more. Apart from that I have no complaints and would definitely recommend Southmead Hospital to friends and family. Thank you

Whilst I wouldn't want to be in hospital, especially over Christmas, my experience of Southmead hospital was very positive and the level of care shown to me and my family was fantastic. The only niggle was on my discharge where I was told in the morning I could be discharged following an early morning scan and set of blood tests, but it took until 17:00 to finally be released. Something that I thought could/should have been speeded up, especially with all the news about the lack of beds. That said, I wouldn't want to take away from the overall experience I had and would like to thank all the staff who I came into contact with.

I recently had day surgery at Southmead hospital. The staff were excellent in allying my fears and took the time to listen to me. Of particular note were the anaesthetists who were very kind and gave me enough control in theatre just prior to my anaesthetic to stop me from panicking. Also, the two nurses who cared for me during my recovery were excellent - I had a rough post operative recovery and was very sick and dizzy afterwards. They called the anaesthetist back and made sure I stayed in overnight until I had fully recovered, despite pressure from the day surgery manager to get me up and out. My only complaint would be the lack of follow up afterwards as there was no routine outpatients appointment for the surgery I had. Having worked so hard with my consultant to actually get to theatre, it does feel a little strange that I can't say thank you face-to-face and close the loop on that episode of care.

From the moment I met Mr. Theo he put me at ease with his calm manner and was very charming. I was to have a tumour removed from left side of head and was very anxious. He explained the procedures to be taken which reassured me about what I was to undergo. I was visited daily after the op and Mr Teo explained how things had gone and my recovery. My recovery went well and the scaring is now invisible after four months following the operation. I found Mr Teo extremely competent and charming throughout the whole procedure.
